Tutorials

To help you getting started with Renoise you can use tutorial modules. You will find them in the Songs folder. We tried to use appropriate instruments with appropriate effects to demonstrate effect potential, but you can use such effects on anything else.

Actually those tutorial songs are more like example songs. They don't show the full potential of Renoise, they only demonstrate some cool effects and features.

Here is what they demonstrate

  • Tutorial 1
This demonstrates the use of the note delay and note retrigger commands that can help you to make some "funky" beats. Look for these effect commands in effect columns. You can also try playing one track solo and hear exactly how the effect modifies beats.
  • Tutorial 2
This is an example of filters and multi note columns. First we have a volume and panning envelope (in Instrument Editor in Properties window). Volume envelope defines the change of volume over time. This envelope gives string a nice fade in. When Renoise encounters the "note off" command in pattern editor, the strings will not stop playing immediately, they will fade out first. This fade out value is defined also in Instrument Editor. Now switch to panning envelope in Instrument Editor. This shows how stereo panning will be done over time. It simply bounces from the left to the right speaker. Finally we have Track Envelopes in Properties window. Here we used filter envelope on the channel with the strings to give them filter slide and make them sound more interesting. Experiment with envelopes by turning them on and off to hear the difference. Notice how filter cutoff values are changed by the filter envelope while the song is playing in Track DSP's view in Properties window. Tracks using track filters are marked with the sign. Notice how me made use of multi-note columns in the strings track to enter chords.
  • Tutorial 3
demonstrates the usage of the pitch slide command. You can slide to particular note with this command. You can use such slides for leads, strings etc.
  • Tutorial 4
demonstrates the filter and distortion effects. Try disabling both effects to hear the difference. Distortion and Filter values are altered using Track Envelopes.
  • Tutorial 5
shows one way to use 09 pattern effect to slice loop samples without cutting them. If loop samples are cut properly you can trigger for example snare sample by entering 0940 command in pattern editor. Later in song you can see how to time stretch loop using only 09 effect. Its a bit difficult to explain, so you definitively have a closer look on it by yourself.
  • Tutorial 6
This is another usage of 09 command to achieve quick loop repeating effect (hard to describe but load it instead listen and see how it is done).
