Here you'll find the most technical part of the manual. Have a closer look at the Pattern Effect section. You will find some pretty cool commands there to give you even more control over playing notes with Renoise. Once you master those, you have a very powerful tool in your hand.

Maybe this is a little off topic, but lets talk a bit about configuration files found in the Renoise directory here.

After having used Renoise once, there will be some new files next to Renoise.exe. Let's explain what they do:

  • Log.txt
This file is created and updated while renoise is running. If you experience some buggy behaviour and want to ask the developers for help, its a good idea to send us this file together with an optional stacktrace.log (created only when renoise crashed).
  • Config.xml
This is the place where Renoise stores all its configurations. There are some "hidden" settings which you can adjust in that file :

    mCooperativeGUIPerformanceInWindowedMode
    (default 1)
This setting is good for optimization of CPU power. "0" means that all available CPU power is assigned to Renoise in Windowed Mode, "1" that Renoise runs on lower CPU priority.
    mCooperativeGUIPerformanceInFullscreenMode
    (default 0)
This setting is good for optimization of CPU power. "0" means that all available CPU power is assigned to Renoise in Fullscreen Mode, "1" that Renoise runs on lower CPU priority.
    mUseWheelToControlDeviceSliders
    (default 0)
Activate (set to "1") this option if you want to control all sliders in Renoise with your mouse wheel. Be aware though that if you do, you won't be able to scroll the Track DSP window with the mouse wheel any more.

  • KeyboardMappings.xml
This file contains all keyboard shortcuts. We save those into this separate file, so you can share your set of shortcuts with other Renoise users.
  • UserEnvelopes.cfg
All envelope presets (like those from the Instrument editor) are stored here.
  • VstInfo.dat
When you configure your VST Plugins-Directory, Renoise starts trying every VST plugin to see if it works correctly. Once this process is finished, the results will be saved in this file. That way Renoise dont have to check your plugins every time you start Renoise, although it would recognize new plugins which you added after that file was created. If you want to force Renoise to rescann all your VST Pluings once again simply delete this file.
